Date details : July 817
Charter type : Donation
Drawn up : Lucca [Tuscany]

Content details :
Gumprandus, son of the late Martinus, built “pro anima” the church of Santi Martino e Giorgio in a field of his property in Iuliano, called “at Celeste”. He now donates “pro anima” to this church the soil over which the church rises and all the buildings and goods he received from Sichimundus, son of the late Taitonus, except the movables, that will remain under his possession. He retains the usufruct of the aforementioned goods for the rest of his life and commits himself to overseeing the divine office, the illumination and the solemn masses in the church. He commissions his brother Ildarus – should he be ordained priest – to take care of the church after his death, and afterwards one or two of the sons of his brothers – should they become priests. Finally, he commits himself, his brother, his nephews and whoever will oversee the church “pro indiviso” to (1) feeding three priests and six paupers on the day of the feast of San Martino – giving each poor man half bread, three cups of wine and six portions of food; (2) appointing a priest for the divine office whenever necessary; (3) avoiding the alienation of the church and its possessions. Should this not happen, the bishop “pro tempore” of Lucca will have the power of restoring the church of Santi Martino e Giorgio to the conditions described in this document.
